Tony and I went out today and found a group of homeless people just sitting near a park. At first they thought we were there to run them away but they soon realized we were up to something else. A few of them walked away when we told them what we were doing, just interacting with them. Four remain and two left when we offered money. The final two entered our program and they were very grateful to be finally leaving the streets. We selected a female and a male both in their late twenties. The male grew up in foster care and had nowhere to go when he turned 18 and the female was a victim of domestic violence and felt safer being homeless than relying on the authorities to keep her safe. It has been a rewarding experience.

Yes I took my cue from Mason as well and I was surprised to see Kendra there. We immediately started working together to find our candidate and we are both very pleased with our selection. I can’t wait to do it again. :cheer: YAAAA!!!

Well you can tell right away which ones have given up and accepted their fate. There were about nine of the when we started talking to them. Four walked away right away saying we looked well off and if we weren’t offering money they had nothing to say. A third one walked off when he saw a friend approaching. The two Rocky mentioned said they just wanted a few bucks to get something to eat, and the final two wanted to talk. They seemed to know we were there to help them, to significantly change their lives for the better, the others didn’t seem to realize that. I think at the end of this activity we will know how to spot the people who really need help and who will benefit from our help.

I stumbled upon my selection quite by accident. I was grabbing a bite to eat for Mike and I and there she was standing against the wall in the rain. I asked her if she was all right and she smiled and shrugged. I asked her if she was hungry and she nodded. She told me I was cute and I told her she was seeing things. It made her laugh. We went inside to order her something to eat and she said they weren’t going to let her sit down and eat it inside. I told her they would because I would sit with her. I was pulled aside and told there was an order for us not to feed the homeless and I told the manager to call the police because no one was going to tell me I can’t be a humanitarian. He nodded, smiled and walked away. My selection is also a young person turned out into the world after a life in the system of foster care. She never knew he father and her mother died when she was eleven. No family ever adopted her. She just wanted to get a diploma but has some learning difficulties. We left the restaurant together and on my way out several people stopped and offered her money and thanked me for taking the stance I took. People see and the realize we all have to care. We have to help, we have to.

I teamed up with Loreen and Alex and we visited a foster care center for older kids. We were looking for the ones turning 18 soon after reading about some of the homeless people joining our program were coming from foster care to the street. There were three of us and we selected two young men and a young woman and I’m glad they will never see the streets or know what it feels like to be homeless.

Wow…it’s scary to think that kids who are never adopted will just be turned out when they become adults. One of the women, a social worker I think, says there’s just no funding to house them passed the age of 18 as sad as it is they have no choice but to release them. She showed me the packet they give them and at the end of the day it’s a bunch of nothing. We learned many of them go into prostitution just trying to survive. They said the pimps are waiting on them as soon as they hit the streets and now they want the girls and the boys. That’s a damn shame, pimps see dollar signs as the young children are turned out into the streets and we as a society can’t see this is a problem.
